Abstract
In this work we assess a simple strategy for having at one's disposal a reliable Monte Carlo simulation tool based on the PENELOPE code, for modeling the interference effects of coherent scattering. We implemented an approach based on the inclusion of experimental values of form factors in the definition of the differential cross section for coherent scattering, without changing the source code. In this sense, theoretical-experimental hybrid tables of form factors have been constructed for materials of biomedical interest: water, PMMA, glandular tissue and adipose tissue. A self-consistency test to assess the use of the constructed hybrid tables was performed successfully. The results of this work are also in good agreement with numerical and experimental results reported in the literature. As a conclusion, the use of hybrid tables in PENELOPE is a suitable approach to improve the description of X-ray coherent scattering in cases where structure effects are relevant like in low-energy X-ray imaging.
