This paper analyzes the challenges to deployment of PV in Argentina. Up to 2009 PV capacity in Argentina was mostly in rural installations. It has grown quickly under the leadership of the Province of San Juan Government, starting in 2010 with the first 1.2 MW San Juan PV system. In April 2012, 360 Energy, a builder of PV electrical power stations inaugurated the first 5 MW of “Solar Park Cañada Honda” also in San Juan. This project has a planned final capacity of 20 MW. There is a measure of agreement that strong PV growth needs to be based on cooperation between the R&D and business communities in developing the technology resources that can enable a broadly based local PV industry. Two projects have begun to provide a framework for development of the necessary technology expertise. FONARSEC, a project financed by the Argentine Ministerio de Ciencia y Tecnologia is providing funds to academic-industrial teams for the study of PV grid connection in the urban environment. This project is being led by a consortium of technology laboratories and universities and includes EDENOR, the largest electricity distributor in Argentina. The project is designed to promote diversification of the energy matrix by the introduction of the technologies for interconnection of PV systems to the public grid in urban areas. Our team is well placed to contribute to PV market expansion in Argentina.
