Abstract
The CNEA's Solar Energy Department (DES) is responsible for the development of the solar arrays for SAOCOM project. This project is being developed by the National Commission for Space Activities (CONAE) in the frame of the Argentine National Space Plan. It consists of an Earth observation system to be applied to the optimization of socio-economical activities and scientific studies. The solar arrays for SAOCOM satellites will have an area of approximately 13 m2 employing advanced triple junction solar cells (ATJ) from Emcore Photovoltaics. The main instrument of the satellite will be a Synthetic Aperture Radar antenna (SAR), operating in the L band of the microwave range. Due to the very high power consumption of the SAR instrument, the design of the power subsystem is critical and the study of different scenarios is required. Solar array power estimations for cold and hot conditions have been performed. Power subsystem simulations for different battery configurations and several SAR measurement scenarios have been also carried out. These simulations let to define allowed scenarios, to estimate the battery state of charge (SOC) limits in the worst case and to verify that the requirements of the mission are satisfied with the proposed configuration.
